The deck seemed stacked against a bright sandy-colored puppy who at five weeks old was found in a pasture among cows, her body covered with sores and her eyes sightless. The cattle farmer who discovered her took her to his vet in Claremont and the vet kept her in his kennels for seven months, hoping he would be able to find a home for her. The staff fell in love with her and some would take her home for short trips but they turned her over to the Charles Smithgall Humane Society figuring it might have better luck on find her a home. The staff at the humane society worked with her on becoming leash trained and managing steps as well as socializing her. Although blind, she seemed to have an amazing sense of radar and would run around her fenced run without hitting the fence or other objects.
Mike and Leigh, of Sautee Nachooche, read her story in the White County News and went right over to meet her at the shelter. It was love at first sight and they welcomed her to her home bordering on the woods with its huge fenced yard. The staff at the vet's had named her Keller but Mike and Leigh changed it to Bambi on the first morning when they saw her hopping happily around like a little fawn in the fenced yard. Bambi quickly became accepted by her older, bigger fur brothers, Duke and Lucky. Lucky was blind from diabetes so Bambi's new parents knew how to handle her.
