Two Smithgall cats happy in new home
August 17th, 2017 5:20 pm
Goldie and Ruby have made themselves at home ❤️ Ruby's nickname is Rubes, and Goldie's is Butterball (she weighs about 10 pounds and just loves to sleep and snuggle, literally). Ruby LOVES hanging out in the bathtub, but decided she does NOT like water (she caught me off guard one morning when I was turning on the shower). We love them so much and couldn't have picked a better pair of cats to join our family

Chevy (aka Luke) happily fills a hole in the home
August 17th, 2017 4:10 pm

When Bob, a rescue dog that Jim and Dianna Wagner had for 14 years, died at age 16, it seemed to leave a big hole in the home, even though they had another dog, a coon hound named Rufus, in the house. So, after a family conference, they  decided to go to the Charles Smithgall Humane Society shelter to rescue another dog and fill that hole as well. They spotted Chevy, a retriever mix puppy who was there with his litter sister.
They picked Chevy, whom they later renamed Luke, after much family conversation because he was so  affectionate, happy and intelligent. Little Luke and his sister had some health problems after being exposed to bat feces but Smithgall had them under control and the Wagners promised to continue giving him the medication.
Luke is splitting his time between homes in Atlanta and the Helen area. Although Rufus wasn't too sure about Luke stealing his toys at first, he...

Little Nettles spends golden years with new family
August 16th, 2017 3:34 pm
The future years did not look too golden for little Nettles when her momperson died and she was brought to the Charles Smithgall Humane Society because there was no one else to look after her.
She was full of hookworms, was struggling with untreated diabetes and a urinary tract infection.  Nettles' medical treatments began to rally her body and the sparkle began to return to her eyes as the Humane Society staff and volunteers showed her kindness and affection.
The chances for her adoption looked slim because of her age and the need for twice daily insulin shots but then someone looked beyond all that and discovered a little treasure of a dog. She now lives in Demorest with a family that includes two doggie friends.
Keller (AKA Bambi), Little blind dog finds happy home
August 4th, 2017 2:37 pm

The deck seemed stacked against a bright sandy-colored puppy who at five weeks old was found in a pasture among cows, her body covered with sores and her eyes sightless. The cattle farmer who discovered her took her to his vet in Claremont and the vet kept her in his kennels for seven months, hoping he would be able to find a home for her. The staff fell in love with her and some would take her home for short trips but they turned her over to the Charles Smithgall Humane Society figuring it might have better luck on find her a home. The staff at the humane society worked with her on becoming l...

Kenny - MerryLegs' Brother Gets a Home, Too!
April 5th, 2017 11:14 pm
Kenny and Karma - now known as MerryLegs - were brought into the Adoption Center from Animal Control. Kenny was adopted but sadly, returned.  He was in a total state of depression when he came back to the shelter. Fortunately, he had MerryLegs to play with again, but then she was adopted into her new happy home, complete with adopted brother Hudson. Thankfully, a wonderful family came in shortly after his sister was adopted, and fell in love with Kenny.  He is now living the dream life in New York with his new adopted family, complete with doggy siblings.
