The Charles Smithgall Humane Society is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization. We are a membership corporation, and rely 100% on donations, including membership! By being a member, you are entitled to vote for your Board of Directors, and cast your vote for bylaw and other corporate changes.* A copy of our bylaws is always on file at the Humane Society.

Want to be an Angel for the Animals?
 Always wanted to help the animals? How about being a Guardian Angel? You can choose a dog kennel, puppy pen, or cat/kitten cage, and sponsor all the pets that reside there for a year. For $100, you can be an Angel for the animals! We will put a certificate up for the kennel, pen or cage, (your choice), and it will let people know YOU are the sponsor of those animals! You can also choose to honor someone, or have a memorial for someone on your certificate, as well. (We mail you a copy of the certificate, too). Some people honor family members, often their children, or have memorials for loved ones who have passed, even beloved pets... or just be an Angel yourself! For $500, you can be an Archangel, which will also sponsor a dog kennel, puppy pen, or cat cage, and all the animals that are residents in it, for a year. Your name and memorial (or honoree) will be put on a permanent plaque in our lobby area, right next to our Guardian Angel logo print! Many thanks to Justine Noble, a White County High School student, who won a contest for designing our very own Guardian Angel for the Animals! We think she did a great job; you have to come the Animal Adoption Center and see the picture for yourself!

If you’d like to donate money towards our cause, there are a couple different ways you can do it. In addition to a one-time donation of any size, or being a Guardian Angel, you are welcome to donate funds towards a specific cause. We have a special Spay/Neuter fund to donate funds to lower income people that want to get their animals fixed. We can help many more people if you donate and specify your gift for this fund. (Note: Funds from this program are allocated by proof of need and restricted by the amount of funds available.)
We always have need for medicines and other treatments by veterinarians, and you can specify that your dollars go towards a medical fund for the animals. Just specify "Rocky's Fund" on your donation. And if you’d like to give the gift of a loving friend for someone else, you may pay for an adoption, so that someone else might take an animal that otherwise might have a hard time of getting adopted, such as an older dog or cat. Of course, all funds go toward helping the animals, and are 100% tax deductible.
Some people donate based on their income, especially those that earn commission. They give what is called a “Perpetual Donation”, where they give a certain percentage of their earnings. Contact a board member or call the Adoption Center for more information.

In addition to a monetary donation, we always need supplies, treats & toys for the animals, and special services. If you are a handyperson, there are odd jobs to be done around the Adoption Center. Free labor helps us spend more of our money directly toward the animals. Our Humane Society is in need of more landscaping, especially the planting of trees for shade, and we’d like to have a walking path put in, with memorial bricks people can give money toward, to be engraved. If you are a landscaper and can donate plants, pavers, or other materials, it would be very much appreciated!
