Did You Know...
You can fill out a Volunteer Form online, right from your computer to ours? There are many areas where help is needed, so please fill one out online, and we will contact you to discuss where you can help. Or stop by our Adoption Center during visiting hours and fill one out. Thanks!
We have an orientation DVD at our Adoption Center, which introduces you to the shelter and how to care for the animals. First time volunteers are requested to watch this video at the Adoption Center. Please let the staff know if you haven’t seen it yet... It *stars* our very own Ms. Ginny Parker!

Throw Your Coins in the Helen Fountain for the animals!
Attention TEENS: We love having your help at the Humane Society! Please consider giving some of your time to the animals! Stop by and fill out an application at the Adoption Center during Visiting Hours.
* (Note: Students under 18 must have signed parental consent, and will need to go through Volunteer Training & be approved before attending unsupervised by guardian.)
Parents, this is a great activity to do together with your teens - and tweens!
Many, Many THANKS to: Certified Trainer Joyce Alves who was very generous in donating her time, and started a new Obedience Course to train dogs for Pet Therapy. A group of us who had adopted shelter pets took part in this program and now these canines are certified to visit schools, nursing homes and more. Joyce has been no stranger to our humane society in past years, helping with everything from grooming to pet education. This was just another wonderful way she donated her time, and we are very grateful to her!
Many thanks to Joyce for her time & expert training of our animals - & us!

YOUR HELP NEEDED:
Volunteers to help with a monthly GROOMING DAY at the Adoption Center!
We are looking for volunteers to help with bathing, grooming, and trimming dogs (& cats, as needed) at our Adoption Center. Personal or professional experience preferred. (If you have bathed your own dog or trimmed his nails, that qualifies!) We will start meeting the 3rd Sunday of every month at 1pm. If you can't come every month, that's ok, too! Please contact our Adoption Center if you can help. March 21st will be our first official grooming day!

Many thanks to all the Volunteers that helped us with our Upscale Clothing Sale! It was a great success, and we earned over $2100 for the adoption center. Also, St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church was so gracious to host the venue for us, and it was perfect. We can't do it without you - thanks for all your help!!

Shown here helping with our clothing sale are: Pat Edwards, Marg Morrow, Pegi Compton, Larry Compton, Adam Morrow, Megan Girard & John Shaw

Volunteers help here...
A couple little readers learn how to properly hold puppies - to support their bottoms with your hands or in your lap!

This little reader couldn't help but be very curious about our Adoption Center pets!
And Here...
PetSmart in Gainesville, &
The Local Pet Shop in Cleveland, have both graciously offered to let us have Adoption Booths there, so if you can help on a Saturday or Sunday, please let us know! We'll be setting up some days as soon as we can get volunteers, and would love to have our pets seen by many more people, especially pet lovers like PetSmart & The Local Pet Shop customers! Other humane societies that have had booths at PetSmart have had many adoptions, so this would be a great place to show some of our wonderful pets, and gain room in our Adoption Center for new ones. Help us find Forever Homes for our shelter pets!
Please call or e-mail if you can help.
Thank you for caring about us!

What’s Been Happening...
Our Adoption Center is filled completely right now, so that means volunteers are needed daily to walk the dogs, and groom all the animals. We need volunteers for a grooming day once a month, on the 3rd Sunday, at 1pm. Experience with trimming nails & using a grooming razor is a plus, (even with your own pets!) We also need Adoption Counselors, so if you’re interested, please contact us for more details. There are always chores, cleaning and odd jobs that need to be done at the Humane Society, and we need help answering the phone and assisting visitors. Please consider offering a day a week or a month to help out. If you don’t know when you’re going to have free time, but want to help, just c’mon by during public visiting hours! Our animals can always use extra love!
Sometimes, there are a few of our animals that are very shy, and what they need most is just social time with people. Sitting quietly with them to boost their confidence is very helpful. Teaching them to sit or other basic obedience tasks will make them all the more adoptable, so just stop by and ask what you can do! Our staff is wonderful with our Adoption Center pets, but don't have all the time they would like to devote to each dog & cat in the shelter. Just giving pure love is a great benefit to all the animals, and sitting with them so they can build trust is something that just takes patience. The reward you get when you earn their trust is like nothing else!

Fostering is a continuing need, and foster parents for dogs and cats are needed. Fostering not only frees up space in the Adoption Center for other pets to be sheltered, but it also gives animals a great way to learn home environments, and begin to be socialized for a new home. Teaching animals basic commands, and working with them so the learn what is right & wrong behavior, just makes them all the more adoptable. Please contact the Humane Society if you are interested - it is a wonderful thing to do for the pets, and we're betting you'll get just as much out of it! All our animals, including foster pets, are posted on Petfinder for people to see. And we are working on a foster board in our Humane Society, for people to see pictures & descriptions of those pets when they come into the Adoption Center, too. Oh, that's another thing - anyone who is interested in helping with our info boards in the Adoption Center, please let us know... we'd love the help!

Volunteer of the Month!

Marg Morrow put in countless hours helping with our Upscale Clothing Sale - thanks so much!
|
Marg Morrow is a new volunteer this year, and we are very grateful to have her. She helped with our recent Upscale Clothing Sale, including loading clothes to take to it ahead of time. She has been hanging around the Adoption Center, too, as she & her son Adam found out about our 2 beautiful senior boxers, Maxx & Patsy, who were together, and wanted to stay that way. Marg & Adam adopted both of them, and we know they are going to be one big, happy family! Marg was a huge help to us this month in many ways. So Marg - a big thank you from Charles Smithgall Humane Society for all that you do! The pets are especially grateful!

2nd Annual Pets on Parade & Costume Contest!
Sat. May 22, 2010

Former Volunteer Coordinator
Michael Stanley lines up contestants for Pets on Parade '09
Our first Pets on Parade & Costume Contest was a great success, so we are going to do it again this year... and boy, will we need VOLUNTEERS to help! This event is in downtown Alpine Helen, and as you can imagine, it will take a lot of people to coordinate all the people and pets. This is a really fun event, so if you can help, please contact the Humane Society and let us know, so we can contact you when we have specific duties lined up. We will need help with parking, registration, setting up and cleaning up, information booth and silent auction, as well as many more things. If you want to see some fun costumes and be around people who love their pets, this event is for you! Be sure to check our Forums page for updates, too, starting soon!

White Co. 4Hers keeping cool in the Helen fountain on some hot summer days!
Want an excuse to play in the water? Well, that's what White County 4-H Students are doing in the Helen Fountain! The City of Helen has graciously donated the proceeds of all coins thrown in the downtown fountain to our Humane Society! (Thanks, Alpine Helen!) It's a wonderful thing, but someone has to 'fetch' all those coins... So Lyn Forrest and the 4H students have graciously offered to come twice a month to collect the coins from the fountain. It's not so easy -- we've found that coins collect algae, and can get pretty slippery! The students don't seem to mind, and we appreciate all their help! By the way, we need Volunteers to help clean, sort & dry those coins so that we can take it to the bank for dollars... Anyone willing to help? Just call the Humane Society, or Volunteer Coordinator Michael Stanley. And THANKS, White County 4H!

Camille Walton & her "baby" Emma the Bulldog
The Pets on Parade 2009 was an awesome success, and we couldn't have done it without YOU - our volunteers! Thanks to everyone who helped collect for the silent auction, and set up tables, clean up and transport items. A special thanks to Darlene Broadway and Sue Vendettuoli for their tireless work and support! Thanks to Katie Lynam & friends for bringing her horse for horse rides that day, and for donating proceeds to the Adoption Center! Thanks to Donna Myers and the staff at Betty's Country Store for making signs and our sponsors banner. Thanks to the many people who helped volunteer: Sue Williams, Phil & Ruhsar Irish, Lucy Venable, Jane Lenzen & Steve Walsh, Ellen Boyd, Judy Vensel, Cindy Rider, Ken Cox, Adrianna Fortner, Andrew Domingues, Lori Chastain & the White County High School Cheerleaders and the many others who pitched in. Special thanks goes to Anke & Bud Stinson, who coordinated and ran the Adoption Booth, and we're happy to say there were a couple adoptions that day! Also, thanks to Paul Veen & Angie Barhe for sticking it out all the hours during setup and cleanup -- we appreciate it!
