HAPPY ENDINGS

Marg Morrow & her son Adam, with new family members, Maxx & Patsy!
Featured Tails...
Our Canines of the Month were Maxx & Patsy, and they've ended up being our Happy Tails story, too! This is what we said about them:
We have two wonderful senior Boxers named Patsy and Maxx who have spent their whole lives together. They are devoted to each other and the best-behaved canines you could ask for. They need a loving home to spend their golden years in.
Well, we're very, very happy to say that both Patsy & Maxx were adopted together by 2 wonderful people - Marg & Adam Morrow! We think all 4 of them are going to be very, very happy! We look forward to future 'tails' about Maxx & Patsy, and are grateful to Marg & Adam for extending their loving home to include 2 more!
Happy Adoption Tails/Tales!
Smilie - Jane Lenzen, Guardian
I went to a Smithgall meeting, and saw this adorable, happy little dog wandering around like she owned the place and just kept watching her interact with people and her chewie. I said I would foster and hopefully find her a home. After 3 days, she found a home all right!! She was called Sweetie, but she can be a holy terror!! Non-stop energy, eats everything in sight and greets my customers like they were long lost friends to the dismay of a few grumps. She is extremely smart, funny, and full of joy, so I renamed her "Smilie" to fit her energy and happy-go-lucky spirit. My cats love and play with her, but she learned quickly to respect their fast swipes. She loves to go for long walks with my other precious dogs and take a dip in the Chattahoochee. She fits in beautifully with our big pet family!
Smilie attended our Pet Parade; the crowd loved her and she loved everyone!
Dooley - Viveca Cooper, Guardian

Dooley was adopted as a puppy and his owner sent pictures of him as he is growing. He is a healthy, active, happy boy in his new home!

Effie - Linda Bloom, Guardian
We adopted a white shepherd/yellow lab mix puppy on April 5, 2008. Effie turned one year old in January so I thought I would send another update with photos. She is a wonderful, sensitive dog and a joy to have around. She turned out to be a great, patient companion for our other dog, Tybee, who is always in her face, wanting to play. The following photos are:

1. Effie is about to go for a run with her uncle in Savannah 2. Effie and Tybee are very tired after returning home from Savannah. They both ran with our brother-in-law for a total of 12 miles over the weekend
3. Effie thinks she is a lap dog.
Lily - Baumeister Family, Guardians
We adopted Lily from your shelter in September 1998. She was then known as "Nola". She has been the best dog we could ever hope for. In the nearly 10 years that we have had her, she has been a protector and friend. When we got her, she weighed about 45 lbs., but soon after she filled out to about 68 lbs. It was obvious she had been mistreated, and never inside a house before. She was shy at first and we found out after we had her about 2 weeks that she was epileptic. But with a lot of love and medication, she has thrived. Two years later, we were given a yellow Lab now named Big Frank. It was a match made in heaven. These two are inseparable. In 2002, my wife and I had twins and Lily became the supervisor of the children. To this day, she doesn't let them out of her sight. I just wanted you to let you know how much she means to us. Keep up the great work.
Pretty Lily
Maya – Ginny Parker, Guardian
Maya was brought into the Shelter completely undernourished from having five huge puppies. She had the most beautiful blue eyes that one of our volunteers took her home to fatten her up and she stayed with her and her other four rescue dogs. She now comes to the Shelter three days a week to work and be a Good Will ambassador, and is in training to become a certified therapy

Buster – Tout Family, Guardians (submitted by Polly Erickson)

Buster was a very happy tails story because he had a difficult beginning. He came to our shelter as a puppy, but he was almost walking on his knees, his legs were so bent. Thinking it might be a birth deformity, and very worried about anyone wanting to adopt a dog with lots of potential health problems, we weren’t sure Buster would be able to live with legs as they were. We took him to Dr. Julie, though, at Sautee Vet, (thank you, Dr. Julie!), and she said he just had Ricketts – something we hadn’t experienced here before! He was malnutritioned and needed not only good food, but large doses of Vitamin D. Thanks to Dr. Julie’s diagnosis, Buster was given a 2nd chance. A volunteer family took him home for about 2 months, gave him good food, nutrition and lots of socialization with their 4 dogs! Buster’s legs started looking better after just a couple weeks, and he started walking much better, but there was still some bowing of his legs, which we figured would be permanent. A very nice family from south of Atlanta visited one day, and saw Buster, and thought he would be a good playmate for their dog. They were willing to work with his deformity, accept future vet bills, and adopted him as their own. He was about 25 lbs. when he left us. The Touts lovingly accepted Buster into their home, and sent us a picture about 4 months later. Buster was not a little guy anymore – he was HUGE! Seems Buster had a little Great Dane in him, too! And if you didn’t know about the legs from his early days, you’d never see it – he looked great! Best news of all – Buster is happy in his new home, and we are very thankful!

Special – Erickson Family, Guardians
Special got her name from the staff because she was just that – Special! She was smart, sweet, & loved everyone, but it took a few months to get her adopted. There is often no reason why ones don’t get adopted as fast as others, and Special was a great example. She got a home, though, right before Christmas, so she got treats, toys and 3 new sisters from Santa that year! She was 10 mos. old when she was adopted, and now is 5 yrs. old, and still very happy!
Special – her name suits her!

Cassie – Erickson Family, Guardians
Cassie was basically a feral dog; it was obvious she had next to no contact with humans when we got her. She was brought in by Animal Control after someone had called and said she’d been dumped in a drain hole, and they had been trying for 2 weeks to get her out. (Why they’d wait 2 wks., I don’t know!) Cassie sat in the back of her kennel at first, shaking anytime someone went near her. As she got to know the staff, I started to visit every day, and just sat in her kennel with her. There was a sweetness about her, but also a sassiness that made me feel that if I could just get her over being scared, she’d be a lot of fun. She really warmed up when I took her to school one day for our Pet Education program. She tolerated the children OK, but what really made her happy was playing with the other puppies I had brought. I just had to take her home to foster her, but I really knew it would be more permanent than that! It was, and now Cassie is a happy girl with 4 sisters! She still is shy around new people, but she’ll bark at cars like she's the brave one! She’s super sweet and lots of fun. Her funny habit is that she always has to have a toy or stuffed animal in her mouth when she goes from room to room, or inside to outside. They’re her security blanket, and she has 2 bears that are her very own – she lays her head on one!
Cassie running at home the week we got her; she loves to play!
